Het project in het kort door BURMA CENTRUM NEDERLAND
The Burma Center Netherlands (BCN) aims af democratisation and sustainable development in Burma. BCN works towards this aim through
efforts bringing an end to military rule in Burma on the one hand and through strenghening civil society in Burma on the other.
Through political lobby and anti-investment campaigns the BCN wants to put pressure on the regime to start a constructive dialogue
with the democratic and ethnic opposition groups. Through activities with representatives from different ethnic groups it strives
to increase the understanding between the ethnic groups, which is also of great importance for civil society building.
In line with this strategic approach, BCN has developed the following main areas of work and connected with this the following
activities in 2005:
A. Lobby policy makers in the Netherlands, Europe and Asian diplomats in Europe about the importance of continuing humanitarian
and political support to Burmese refugees, intensified pressue on the Burmese junta to start reforms etc.
B. Campaigning against companies investing in Burma, for example: boycotting teak and other Burmese wood products; the Yadana gas
field project, in which Total-Fina-Elf (France-Belgium) is a major stakeholder, represents the largest foreign investment in Burma;
Austrian Airlines/Lauda Air (large scale tourism to Burma); campaign against the Dutch tourism industry active in Burma; IHC-Calan
d is still the Netherlands`main investor in Burma.
C. Strenghening of civil society organisations in Burma and Burmese organisations in exile. Special attention for: HIV/AIDS and
Health Care; Drugs Policy; Environmental degradation (logging and mining); Arakan State Reconciliation Project (tension between
Buddhists and Muslims).
D. Dissemination of information to a broad public and specific target groups, such as: photo-exhibition about Burmese refugees,
